Wood Working Power Machines

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Wood has always been popular as a building material, because it was plentiful and easier to work than alternatives like stone. However, man has always required tools to work wood efficiently. First axes and then chisels and later on saws and drills. Between 250 and 150 years ago, during the Industrial Revolution, early wood working tools, amongst others, were mechanized. A 100 years or so ago they were electrified. The first electric drill was manufactured about 100 years ago.

Power tools, as they later became known, really took off in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Power tools became affordable for even infrequent use, so hobbyists began to buy them too. Nowadays, most households have a few hand and power tools, normally a hand saw, a hammer and a power drill.

Other power tools are normally for professional or serious hobbyist use. These power tools may be driven by petrol, but are normally electric. The range of power tools varies from cutting and drilling to polishing, although there are dozens of varieties in between these definitions.

Some of these machines are hand-held and others are fixed. Examples of fixed wood working machine tools are the: bench drill press, the bench saw, the belt sander and bench grinder. Typical hand-held power wood working machines are the: power drill, orbital sander, chain saw and the router.

A further development in technology over the last ten years or so is the prevalence of the rechargeable power tools. These are extremely popular for site work, because it means the elimination of extension leads and generators. Typically, each power tool will have two batteries, one in use and one on charge.

However, a further sophistication, if you purchase all your rechargeable power tools from one manufacturer, is that the batteries of all the tools fit all the tools. That is, they have been standardized. This is very useful if you have three of four power tools.

Power tools can make the job go more quickly and more easily, but they can also have the opposite effect. My father was a carpenter and I remember when he went to work with a canvas bag full of hand tools. None of them were electrically driven, even the drill was a brace and bit. He could carry everything he required in that bag to do any job he wanted to do on any house or roof.

Nowadays, my nephew, also a carpenter, has to have a van to take all his power tools to work. He is just as capable of doing everything on any house or roof but he can do it more quickly. The skills of the two generations are not the same although they intended at the same results. My father’s tool kit included a whet stone to sharpen his chisels and he regularly reset his hand saws. My nephew has boxes of replacement blades and buys throwaway Jack saws by the dozen.

However, power wood working machines require a different set of skills because they work at a higher speed. You can make a bigger mess of a job more quickly and more easily with power wood working machines.

Fixing, Creating, Restoring And A DIY Guide To Painting And Decorating Sash Windows

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Sash windows can be fun to repair, so here is a DIY Guide to painting and decorating sash windows. After removing the lock, and old putty with a putty knife, or even a butter knife, along with any other sealants that may have been put on over the years, sand the wood of the windows. It does not need to be perfect, but sand it as smoothly as you would like to see the paint over it. Then take a damp cloth and wipe the loose sand off, making sure it is clean to paint.

You can protect the window glass from painting it or splashing it by using masking tape or a painters tape. Just tape around the edges of the glass where it meets the wood. But if you do paint the glass, no worries, it will wipe off wet or you can use a straight edge razor to remove it if it dries.

Using a primer first is always a good idea. It will seal the wood better and hold on to the paint longer. So primer the wood of the windows first. When this dries, you are ready to paint. The indoor and outdoor will be best for this, as your windows will be exposed to the elements to a degree.

The raised bottom sash, on the center mullion is where you might want to start. Then you can paint outwards from the center. Next paint the sides of the window, on the vertical mullions. Go to the tops next, to the horizontal ones. Some of the top of the vertical mullion may be hidden, so if you cannot paint it all, just leave it, and paint only the exposed part. You may find an easier method of where to start. It really depends on the preference of the painter.

After the paint is dried, you will want to have fun decorating, and this is much more exciting than the painting part. So use your imagination and try different things. You can measure and purchase appropriate shades and draperies for your sash windows, or you can make them. And there are so many combinations of curtains and draperies you can use, for example, you can place curtains over mini blinds. Or you can use mini blinds for simplicity and perhaps put a swag at the top. You can use double layers of curtains for a more three-dimensional effect.

Your decisions will all depend on the atmosphere you want to create in the room. But whatever you decide, here is hoping that this small DIY guide to painting and decorating has been helpful.

Instructions On How To Install DIY Metal Buildings

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

After you have lived in a home for quite some time, it is obvious that you tend to accumulate more things. After a while you might find that you have acquired so many different items that you are either going to have to sell a lot of your stuff just to have room. Another option that you have is go out and get yourself one of the many different types of DIY metal buildings.

You probably think that this would be far too difficult to do on your own, but if you get one that is not too big, there should be no reason why you could not go a head and put the building together yourself. Of course it is in your best interest if you recruit some family and or friends to help you construct it.

You will need a few items that are not included with the building kit in order to be able to erect it. Those items would be a transit, level rod, level, carpentry tools, and plumb bob. Once you have gathered all of these you are going to have to get some concrete so you can make a floor for your building. Make sure that you pay close attention to how to mix and pour the concrete. Before you do however; make sure the area is completely cleared of any debris.

Once you have measured out the area for the concrete of the future steel buildings and have cleared the area you can now pour the concrete where the building is going to be erected. The next thing you will do is to make sure you put in the anchor bolts and after that you can level out the concrete with a transit. Use a level to make sure you have smoothed it out evenly.

The columns that come with DIY future steel buildings are the next thing that you will erect. You will connect them with the girts that came with the building parts. To keep the columns from falling you will need to set up a temporary structure that will hold them in place. Make sure to tighten your anchor bolts at this point.

Now that you have done all of this attach the girts, purlins and eave struts. Make sure that everything is level at this point by either using a plumb bob or a transit. When you are done with that tighten all of the connecting bolts as well as the anchor bolts.

Take the components for the end building and finger bolt the pieces together. After this is done you will need to hoist these into position with the primary building.

Now make sure to install load bracing rods both horizontal and diagonal before you do anything else. These must be anchored to the columns with eye bolts, washers and nuts. You will now take the rest of purlins, girts, and the struts and erect them. Anchor all of them with fasteners very loosely. Finally plumb and level everything again then go around and tighten everything that needs to be tightened.

The final thing that you will do is attach metal roof sheet as well as all of the metal wall sheets. These need to overlap the outside ribs when you fasten them. Use a continuous tape sealer or you can use mastic tape, either one is good for waterproofing. Insulation can be added to both the walls and roof if you want. You can also add trim, gutters and flashings.

Offering state-of-the-art production values and engineering, our future steel buildings are among the best in the industry. The future steel buildings come in practical and efficient designs. A wide range of future steel buildings is available at affordable prices.

You Can Make A Wood Working Business Out Of Your Hobby

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Timber is the worldwide preferred material for making furniture for the home. This means that wood workers are always in demand and can find a job literally anywhere in the world, if they have enough skill. Therefore, if you have an interest in wood working, you could easily turn your hobby into a flourishing business.

If you are a novice at wood working then you will need to acquire the requisite skills at woodworking before you can begin a business. The easiest way to do this is by making things. That is obvious, but I mean get hold of a collection of woodworking plans and start making items from the simplest upwards.

You could start with uncomplicated items like swing seats, bird tables and dog kennels. When you have mastered the skills necessary for these popular items, you can already start selling them or taking orders to manufacture them. Once you have got to this stage, you could move on to garden furniture like benches, recliners and tables.

You should have no trouble selling hand-crafted, unique wooden furniture. Woodworking is one of the few occupations where you can make money from day one. Cash in hand. I am not saying that you should not keep proper accounting records, but until you really get going, you will almost certainly be trading in ready money.

Once you have mastered the skills of making garden furniture and have gained the experience of selling those objects and maintaining accurate financial records, you could start making indoor furniture. You could begin with wine racks, breakfast bar stools and storage boxes. These objects are also readily salable.

At this period, you could be thinking of taking on an apprentice and an assistant. When you have gotten this far, you have the foundations of a business and it is time to start learning management skills.

You will need to go to night school and learn about book-keeping and industrial law. You will need to learn how to conform with government and union requirements and you will need to learn how to collect and pay taxes.

You will also need to learn how to advertise. Advertising is a skill of its own, but it is one that you will have to use, if you want your new business to grow. Now you may be at the stage where you need to take on a few more employees and a few bench machines in order to speed manufacture up.

Wood working or carpentry, is a fine trade to be in and you really could be an employer, running your own business within five or six years if you stick with it. You actually can take your wood working hobby and turn it into a wood working business.

Suggestions On How To Replace A Sash Cord On Double Hung Windows Without Too Many Headaches

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Having a basic understanding of double hung windows will help when learning how to replace a sash cord. There are two sashes on a double hung window, the upper and lower. The framework that holds the glass in place is the sash. The two sashes slide up and down in the window frame. The jambs are the sides of the frame. Sash weights are heavy oblong shaped pieces of metal that connect to a rope-and-pulley system. They sit in a cavity behind the jambs. The windows are easy to open due to the counterbalance the weights provide.

Stops or wood moldings attached to the jambs create grooves that a sash window uses to slide. In order to remove the frame you need to pry the parting stop and the inside stop from the jambs.

Before you start this project, make sure you have the correct tools and material readily available. You will need new sash cord, a putty knife, a hammer, a utility knife, putty, finishing nails, paintbrushes and in case you chip away the paint, enough paint to touch it up.

Remove the molding on both sides of the bottom sash. Place your putty knife near each nail that is holding the wood in place and gently pry them loose. Practice patience as the wood can split easily if you try to rush.

Once the inside stop is removed the window can be easily pulled out. With the framework out, remove the broken cord from its fastened slot. Remove the access panel if there is one. Removing the access panel allows accessibility to the weight. If there is no access panel, removing the window casing on the sides will be the only way to get to the weight.

Sometimes these panels have layers of paint on them, you will need to chip the paint away to locate the screws that are keeping the panel secure. Once the panel is out, cut off any remaining cord. Feed the new sash cord over the pulley and down into the cavity that holds the weight until you can see it in the access panel. The new cord should be tied to the weight with a strong knot but not too bulky as it can bind in the window frame. Put the weight back in the cavity and put a knot in the other end of the cord allowing the weight to hang three inches above the windowsill when the window is in a fully raised position.

Replace the framework and insert the moldings using finishing nails to secure them. Fill any gaps in the moldings with the putty. Paint any chips in the wood. The project is complete and your double hung window should work like new. Do-it-yourself homeowners can learn how to replace a sash cord by following steps found on the Internet or talking with professionals at our local hardware store.

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Moves in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world trying to make sash windows improve the energy efficiency of homes by twenty five percent more means that the traditional sash window workshop tools of the trade are set to evolve.

One sash window workshop in London has made an astounding development that can lessen the effects that sash window manufacturing might have on deforestation levels. These changes could possibly effect the sash window workshop tools of the trade.

The most startling of developments is the creation of a test tube in which sash window wood can be grown in under three weeks. That’s right, one test tube, one window and all in just three weeks. More entrancing still is knowing that this new timber can be grown in any shape.

Deforestation issues are key to this new design. The need to chop down healthy thriving trees for timber dense sash windows has been of recent concern. Sash windows can now however be made to orderly in numerous styles, and will owe their shape to the structure of the test tube in which they are grown.

This is going to mean a tremendous change in the traditional tools of some workshops, as well as for the companies that sell them. Some workshops would never sacrifice the traditional means entirely. These shops often prefer to adapt to improvement in the materials and process, without sacrificing the original method in order to do so.

Products such as trickle vents and the sash weights, fasteners and pulleys of yesteryear will never entirely disappear. The true lure of sash windows is the undeniable attachments to the traditional methods and tools used to design a quality product. It is in partial about a level of craftsmanship that cannot be altered without changing the final result.

The major fascination with sash windows is that they are an old yet already perfect way of bringing light into the house. Traditionalists will welcome change that increases energy efficiency but are likely to shy away from such drastic changes in manufacturing.

The Story Of Sash Windows

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Sash window history is fascinating for one interested in the progress of civilization. This brief article will only touch the highlights, as it is a subject that could almost fill a book. Developed with the idea of making a frame with glass panels, which could be opened, and operated with pulleys, springs and balances it was an instant success. Some of the older homes of the 18th century still have this type of window.

It has never been determined just who came up with the idea of sash windows. That honor has been claimed by Holland, France and England but no evidence has ever been produced to back these claims. This window became very popular with the wealthy people of the era and was in great demand.

The first use of these windows, according to research, occurred in England in the 17th century. Considered a high status symbol they were in demand by royalty and wealthy people. A window which could not be opened, called a lead-light window was in use prior to this time. The new window became even more expensive, and thus more valued, when a window tax was introduced from 1600 to the 1880s.

As the windows were so popular, more and more additions were made. Among these were adornments worked in around the frame. Development of classic grazing in the 18th century created quite a stir and immediately became the rage. This was done by placing six panes over six panes in the frame.

With the event of mass production of steel window casings and solid windows, the sash window fell out of popularity and further development of the aluminum window decreased their popularity. With the development of the double pane window in the 1980’s and the desire to conserve energy sash windows were no longer wanted.

Several reasons were advanced for this decline. The main reason being that with the sash window much of the work had to be done by hand which involved large labor costs. The moldings had to be carefully constructed which could not be mass-produced. It was felt that the newer windows were easier to clean and easier to install.

At the present time there has been a renewal of interest in sash windows. Renovation of other older houses has brought a desire to replace the original materials. As a result, the history of sash windows continues and will be noted in the recording of future history.

To get more information about the great benefits of utilizing sash window repairs London visit today. When you want to raise the value of your home quickly, sash window renovation is a fast and easy way to accomplish the task.

Free Woodworking Plans

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

If you are going to create a stick of furniture, especially if it is fairly complicated or you have never made anything like it before, it is a good idea to get a set of wood working plans. These furniture plans are not dear and free woodworking plans can be found too.

However, it is prudent to be wary of free wood working plans as they may not be accurate and you will have little recourse to complain if they were free or even pirated. Free wood working plans could be all right, but you do not want to find out that they are not half way through the task.

A good set of wood working plans, free or not, will give a clear exploded view of the object to be made and a narrative explaining the different steps and procedures. The plans may also make suggestions about the timber and tools to use, the length of time it could take to make in man hours and the difficulty level.

If you want a large collection of wood working plans, there are CD’s around which have 14,000 on them for $30-40. They are a good bargain. Other places you could search are online forums, the library and craft or DIY shops. Shops are almost certainly the dearest option.

Once you have chosen an item to make, you should consider which style you would like. A kitchen cupboard could be hardwood or softwood. It could be a Welsh dresser or a Scandinavian design. It could be contemporary, traditional, Georgian or Victorian, to suggest but a few.

Once you have answered these questions you can go looking for your wood working plans. You might be successful or you may have to compromise if you cannot get just what you want. This is why I think that it is better to buy a CD of plans that have been sorted into a database, so that you can easily find out what is available in your collection.

You could search for ‘kitchen cupboard’ and 100 woodworking plans might recommend themselves to you. Or you could enter ‘Victorian Welsh Dresser’ and only get two recommendations. The point is that you will not be wasting your time chasing a pipe dream, when there are no plans obtainable for the exact object you are looking for.

When you have a set of suitable plans, I think that it is best to get them blown up, or maybe that is just because of my eyesight. However, it is a nuisance to have to remove your safety goggles to put on your spectacles every time you need to check a measurement. This is effortless from a CD because many printers have a capability to print poster size. If yours does not, take the CD to a printer’s, an architect’s or a technical office. They will be able to print A1 straight from the CC.

Then you can affix this enlarged wood working plan to the wall or an easel and you are all set to start making your furniture in style.
