First, remember to always start at the top and dust down. Cobwebs off the ceiling first, then tackle high shelves and light fixtures, then tables and furniture surfaces, then chairs.

The next thing to do in your battle against dust is to break out the vacuum. The floor is your next surface. It seems weird to think of dusting a floor, but when you vacuum that’s pretty much what you are doing. When you dust surfaces, all of the dust you remove that doesn’t cling to your duster or cloth ends up on the floor. If you vacuum after you dust, you’ll keep the dust from resettling on the surfaces in your home.

Remember to use a wet cloth not a dry cloth though when you are dusting. A dry cloth just pretty much pushes the dust around and that isn’t the goal. You want dust to cling to your cloth so you can pick it up. The dust will cling much better to a wet cloth.

When you wet your cloth, wring it back out. The goal is that it will be wet and dust will cling to it. You don’t want it sopping wet and making the dust into mud! If the cloth gets too dirty, you may need to change it out or clean it before continuing.

Ideally you want to minimize the dust in your home so you don’t have to dust so much to begin with. If you get a good air filter, this is very helpful. Also, don’t smoke. Smoke is particulate matter and gets onto surfaces, and is even slightly sticky making it harder to get up the dust that is around. Finally, open windows end up meaning more dust. It’s just unavoidable.

One last tip: knickknacks are dust magnets. If you have a bunch of small intricate objects collecting dust, you may want to think about thinning the collection some.
