Roofing Your House With Durability And Integrity

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Whether you are renovating your house and need to re-roof the house or whether you’re putting up a new roof, there are a number of critical points you should pay very careful attention to. This job is worth the time, money and trouble you’re going to invest in it because your whole house depends on it. There is no room for half-measures. If the job is being taken care of by a contractor then he too must treat this with the utmost care.

The durability and integrity of the roof depends on the materials you put into its construction. Let’s see what these are, and how you should select them.

Make a list of the quantity required of each material. You will be able to prepare a reliable cost and time estimate from the quantity estimate. There’s nothing worse than running short of materials or money in the middle of a roofing project. Emergency funding means you get to pay a heavy interest penalty. The downtime will be a wasteful and unnecessary addition to the schedule and cost of the project. Consult the supply store about your requirements. Many online stores have a facility to assist you in this work. Typical roofing materials are shingles of asphalt or wood, tiles, and stone. Modern roofing material includes metals, plastics and composites.

Will you be roofing over an existing roof? Check what material the old roof was made of. If the roof was made of asphalt shingles then you’ll have to continue with the same. The old roof was designed to support asphalt and will most likely not be able to bear the weight of clay tiles or slate. There is an outside chance that the building may collapse if loaded with a burden it was not designed for.

If you do use asphalt shingles you can look forward to many years free from roofing worries. Asphalt shingles are not recommended where there is an extreme variation in seasonal temperatures. It’s been reported that asphalt has a tendency to crack in such conditions.

Putting up a new roof gives you much more latitude in selecting the construction and material of the roof. You will need to design the structure very carefully; the integrity and longevity of the house depends on the structural design of the roof.

A house must be pleasing to look at, and you should aim to build an attractive house. But visual appeal is secondary to structural and budgetary requirements. Don’t sacrifice structural strength for visual appeal! Build for climate and conditions of the region your house is located in, never mind that fancy chalet in the design book!

Newer construction materials like metal, plastic, and composites give you the advantage of lighter weight and greater durability than traditional roofing materials. It is worth exploring the applicability of these materials in your roofing project.

The cardinal rule is: Use only top quality material for roofing and construction. Anything less than top quality will mean nagging roof-related problems, from leakage and seepage, to structural instability. The integrity of the roof is an important contributory factor to the integrity of the entire house. The longevity of the house is directly dependent on the longevity of the roof. So make quality your top priority when shopping for roofing material.

Asphalt roofing shingles remain the most popular selection for home roofs, although wood and metal are growing in popularity. Go to www.roofing-information.com to learn more about your roofing selections. Choosing the right roofing material can be the difference between a roof that lasts, and one that needs constant repair.

How To Do Roll Roofing ?

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Covering the flat roofs with roll roofing and built-up roofing are the two most common roofing techniques. Rolled roofing is the other name for roll roofing. As compared to the shingled roofs, roll roofing is highly cost effective and takes virtually no time in its installation. These are manufactured out of the asphalt products in rolls.

Consider the following points while installing the roll roofs. Firstly, determine the length of your roof and accordingly cut a strip of sheet that is to be under laid. The height of this sheet should go up to 3 feet. Place it along the edges of the roof.

Another piece of this sheet is to be cut and laid in a manner that it over lay the existing one by two inches. Secure it with the nails. Repeat the process covering the entire roof. Along the edges of the roof, place the drip edges and secure them properly with nails every 8 inches.

Cut two strips from the roll roofing, each measuring 18 inches in width by the length of your roof and lay them width by the width of your roof. Apply the roofing cement around the edge of the roof. Lay the cut strips of rolled roofing along the edges of the roof so as to cover over the cement. Nail the strips down.

Bring the roll of rolled roofing onto the roof. Starting at the bottom, have one person hold the end of the roll at the edge of the roof. Roll out the rolled roofing material to cover the length of the roof horizontally.

Having laid the roll on the roof cut the extra part. Make sure you align it before nailing. Fix the sheet you just lay using the cement. This will add strength to the roof and the roofing material as well. Further nail it at the bottom and sides of the roof.

Measure 33 inches above the top of the first piece and mark this with a chalk line. Install the second piece, aligning the top of it with the chalk line. This should give you a 3-inch overlap. Apply cement and nail down. Do the same for the other side of the roof as well.

Lay a strip on the peak of the roof, centering the piece so no seam runs along the tip of the peak. Glue and nail down this piece along both sides and edges.

Protecting Your Roof Against Animals

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

If you are an inhabitant of a remote or hilly region, then you might have come across the irritating sounds made by the animals on your roofs particularly at night. The wild animals and creatures of the area keep disturbing the calmness of the home spaces by invading them. Mostly, the roof structures and the attic spaces bear the fury of such invasions. Besides irritating you with their activities, animals can damage the costly structures of the roof as well.

Moreover, the invasion of the animals on your roof can create irritating sounds at any time of the day. You would not like to get disturbed in the middle of the night due to such mischief of the animals.

The animals and the wild creatures attack the segments of the home architecture that are left exposed to them. Usually, they reside on either the roofs or inside the attic spaces of the home. Such segments of the home prove conducive for the rodents and the other creepy creatures.

Inspect the attic space of the roof to investigate the presence of such creatures in the attic space. Remove the creatures from your attic space forcefully using certain repellant solutions. You can visit the local home improvement stores to inquire about the availability of such rodent-repelling solutions. If you do not find any animal or rodent inside the attic space then observe the area for the traits of their presence. For example, the bats or the rats leave their wastes in the area where the live. Consult a salesperson while buying the best quality of repellant.

If however the attic space looks sound and clean then the animals may not have occupied the attic space at all. The irritating noise at nights could be accredited to the movement of animals on the roof. Take a regular saw to the roof and shorten the branches of the tree that are accessing the roof area. Position yourself comfortable on the roof using a tree-climbing gear while cutting the branches of the tree.

Bring in a number of small-sized pieced of glass and install them over the roof fence using cement. This setting would keep away the animals from your roof.

Encourage the growth of bushes and shrubbery around the sidewalk or the home plot to prevent the invasion of the animals.

In addition, you can position a human dummy on the roof to keep away birds and animals.

Basic Roofing Materials

Roof Tiling Materials

Tiles are man made materials, which are made from hard wearing materials such as clay, ceramic materials and occasionally they can even be made out of glass! This said, by far the commonest material used to make roofing tiles is clay. Invariably roofing tiles made this way out of clay have to be treated with a weather resistant glazing coat.

People have been using tiles to build their roofs for hundreds of years and over this time folks have designed many alternative sizes and shapes of tiles. Flat tiles as an example are just about the most basic sort of roof tile. They are more often than not flat and rectangular in shape which makes them excellent for layering on a roof. Flat roofing tiles are extremely often found in roofing applications and the strategies used for making these sorts of roofs have not modified a great amount since the 1970’s!

Other sorts of tiles are roman tiles and single lap tiles. Roman tiles have a curve at one edge and another at the other edge ; this permits them to interlock for additional strength when they’re laid on a roof. Single lap tiles have the shape of the letter s and when they are laid they give a very distinct pattern.

Slate Roofing Materials

Slate roofs are done with roofing tiles made from slate which is an ancient sedimentary rock made up especially from of clay and other volcanic materials, and compounded in the earth by pressure and heat.

Slate is a very common roofing material because it is extremely robust and also waterproof. It is extremely popular as it can be simply shaped into the rectangles that we see on the roofs of today. In the turn out of roofing slates, big pieces of slate rock are broken into tiny sheets quite easily. Again this makes slate the ultimate material for roofing.

Slate roofs can last a particularly long time because slate is a particularly hardwearing material the drawback of slate as a roofing material is that it is very expensive to buy and replace. In some areas roofs need to be kept maintained with specific types of slate to satisfy planning laws and keep the architectural character of buildings uniform in certain areas. Finding specific types of slate in such cases can be terribly difficult and there are few roofing contractors which do this kind of work.

Felt Roofing Materials

Roofing contractors use strong, polyurethane type materials to form felt roofs. A felt roof is applied to a base board which is painted with a preservative coating to make it last longer. Once the base has been prepared the roofing felt is fixed in place using suitable galvanised nails. Felt roofing applications are sometimes for flat roofs like those usually seen on garages and garden sheds. The obvious benefit of using felt as a roofing material on flat roofs is that it is very cheap and thus typically used as a budget roofing solution on outbuildings.
