How To Change A Formal Dining Room To A Relaxed Eating Area

Once upon a time, you decorated your dining room with a formal ambiance in mind. Heavy oak wood dining set, high-backed chairs, chandeliers, a glass cabinet full of expensive china, dark and thick curtains, and intricately designed cloth table runner. It was timely for the formal gatherings you’ve organized and ideal for dinner parties. Fast forward to present time and such a dining room seems a bit off for the casual occasions you have with family and friends. Children are no longer excluded in gatherings and this makes the formality of the dining area severe for the carefree and relaxed attitudes children bring to a place.

A change is needed, but what? After many discussions, many searches through fashion and home decorating magazines, many trips to the stores and outlets, the decision is made to convert the dining room to a more casual look. There are some limitations to work with, however. The large, beautiful cherry furniture pieces will be kept-the table, the hutch, and the buffet. Everything else is on the table for discussion but the new look will have to accommodate these three pieces.

The dining set is the hardest to let go. For one, it’s probably a very expensive furniture set and knowing the state of the economy, it’s better to put off unnecessary spending. Buying a new dining furniture is not really needed. You can make the formal table and chairs “friendlier” with a change in tablecloth, cushions and an addition of an area rug. It all boils down to the choice of color. Use shades that are lighter or brighter for a casual look. Why not store the candelabras in the meantime? You can take them out every Valentine’s Day for a romantic dine-in experience, so it won’t exactly go to waste.

Use seat cushions and area rug that are color-coordinated. Look for a rug that fits the dining table and chairs properly. It’s also time to change the room color from the austere dark tone to something more cheerful. Think pastel, off-white, light green and earth tones.

The change in tablecloth can immediately affect how the dining room looks. With a light-colored cloth, the space will look airy, cozy and warm. You can still use deep colors like shades of red if you want to emphasize elegance in the room. Just make sure that the color matches the rest of the room.

A carpeted floor is one obvious sign of formality but it doesn’t have to go. You can change the carpet’s color if you wish, or take it off and have a bare wood flooring instead. Complement the flooring with an area rug. Check the size of the dining area so you can purchase a rug that can accommodate the dining table set and that includes the chairs with a space left when they are moved back for sitting and getting up. Even a carpet flooring can be accented with an area rug.

You can add more decors by displaying some dining ornaments and collectibles. They don’t have to be rare, expensive pieces. Pretty stuff will do. If you have things you deem as special, you can showcase them in a glassware cabinet for all to see. It could make for a great conversation.

Replace the heavy, multi-layered drapes with simpler, one level curtains or sheers. (Make sure that your meals and gatherings are still shielded from the outside. You don’t want to give up your privacy and security.) Get rid of the tassels and elaborate tie-backs. Replace the heavy cornices with simpler rods and window hardware.

Don’t be daunted by the change in theme from formal to casual. It is feasible, especially with the right materials and decors on hand. The colors and furnishings say it all. The important thing is to retain the fun time with loved ones. The family that eats together, stays together.

Make Your Room Look Larger With Home Decor Tips

When you are living in a place you may have rooms that are huge but with this the room will normally feel too large. People like the feel of a small spot that will seem more comfortable. But in doing this they don’t want to make the area feel cramped either.

So, if you want the best of both worlds, how can you create the illusion that your small cozy space is actually huge? There are numerous approaches to this situation. Here are a few suggestions.

If you have a bunch of clutter around the room, pick it up. Clean out those old papers you have laying around, pile up the blankets too, remove whatever you don’t need in that room. Plus with the furniture you should move them further from walkways; this will open up a room very nicely.

Try using colors to brighten up the rooms feel. Try soft greens and blues which will open the area up and make it larger than it is. Try choosing colors which are already in the furniture that exists so you don’t have to spend more money than you need to.

Adding some color to the room does a lot. You have so many ways to bring an array of colors. One of course would be painting the walls. The reason you shouldn’t incorporate darker colors in the room, it will make the room seem smaller still. With lighter colors the light will reflect off those colors and enlarge the room. But adding warmth in the room will need a dark color so to do this you should only paint one wall, and the rest of the paint can be lighter tone.

Another way to bring in color is through the use of rugs. For a small space it is better to use one big area rug instead of small rugs that tend to chop up the space. When I moved into my friend’s home, I took along my favorite area rug. Her living room was on the small side, especially because her furniture was big and overstuffed. The walls were a very pale green which was good as it reflected the light but the floor was dark wood and rather cold in appearance. Her coffee table took up about a quarter of the room.

Once my area rug was in place under that enormous table, the room seemed to expand. The room was completely transformed with the simple use of an area rug. She was happy and I was proud.

The colors in my area rug were rich, deep tones that gave a feeling of comfort and warmth. The design of the rug was very artful, rather like a large painting for the floor. We found that trading out the big wood table for one that had a glass insert made a huge difference to opening up the room and you could enjoy the rug by looking through the table.

A large area rug brings interest and also expands your small area. Using furniture that is smaller, in a small space will help and then placing some lighting for dark corners and mirrors to give the illusion of greater depth in the room will also help. A couple simple changes, a splash of color and a big area rug and your small cozy space looks huge.
