Redecorating Your Kitchen

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

When it comes time to change the decor in your kitchen you may think it will cost you a bunch of money. But as with any project that you take on you will be able to attempt to save some money. You should though first decide how you are wanting to change the kitchen around.

They have software out on the market that will help you remodel any room in your home. This may be a great choice because you should really have a clear cut idea of what you want the style to look like before you start ripping everything out of the kitchen. This software will help you try out several different looks and how they will look when completed.

You should try to rearrange the appliances you already have or the new ones that you may be placing in the kitchen. This is one of the easiest ways to go about a whole new look, and one that shouldn’t cost you much. Installing a middle island will add a lot to the kitchen and add some extra space where you can fix supper.

You can elect to purchase all new cabinets or you can give your current cabinets a brand new look with paint. It’s a great way to create a brand new look for less money.

Do not forget flooring when you are remodeling your kitchen. Most people today opt for tile or laminated wood in their kitchens. In order to break up the space and add warmth to a tile or wood floor, you can choose area rugs for the kitchen. Throw rugs can be placed under the dining area as well as in front of the sink. You can find matching throw rugs that can be used for this purpose. Bamboo area rugs are ideal for the kitchen. You need to make sure that the area rug you choose for the kitchen floor is washable and durable.

If you want more countertop then try the countertops that overhang. This can create an instant breakfast bar. Just add a couple of bar stools and it is an instant table.

While it is a good idea to do as much of the work yourself when you are remodeling your kitchen, you do not want to make the mistake of doing a bad job because you do not know what you are doing. Be sure to hire professionals to do the work that you are not familiar with. If you attempt to do jobs yourself and do a bad job, then you will just be throwing good money after bad when you have to hire someone to fix the mess that you made. When remodeling the kitchen, stick to what you know and hire pros to do what you do not.

How To Change A Formal Dining Room To A Relaxed Eating Area

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Once upon a time, you decorated your dining room with a formal ambiance in mind. Heavy oak wood dining set, high-backed chairs, chandeliers, a glass cabinet full of expensive china, dark and thick curtains, and intricately designed cloth table runner. It was timely for the formal gatherings you’ve organized and ideal for dinner parties. Fast forward to present time and such a dining room seems a bit off for the casual occasions you have with family and friends. Children are no longer excluded in gatherings and this makes the formality of the dining area severe for the carefree and relaxed attitudes children bring to a place.

A change is needed, but what? After many discussions, many searches through fashion and home decorating magazines, many trips to the stores and outlets, the decision is made to convert the dining room to a more casual look. There are some limitations to work with, however. The large, beautiful cherry furniture pieces will be kept-the table, the hutch, and the buffet. Everything else is on the table for discussion but the new look will have to accommodate these three pieces.

The dining set is the hardest to let go. For one, it’s probably a very expensive furniture set and knowing the state of the economy, it’s better to put off unnecessary spending. Buying a new dining furniture is not really needed. You can make the formal table and chairs “friendlier” with a change in tablecloth, cushions and an addition of an area rug. It all boils down to the choice of color. Use shades that are lighter or brighter for a casual look. Why not store the candelabras in the meantime? You can take them out every Valentine’s Day for a romantic dine-in experience, so it won’t exactly go to waste.

Use seat cushions and area rug that are color-coordinated. Look for a rug that fits the dining table and chairs properly. It’s also time to change the room color from the austere dark tone to something more cheerful. Think pastel, off-white, light green and earth tones.

The change in tablecloth can immediately affect how the dining room looks. With a light-colored cloth, the space will look airy, cozy and warm. You can still use deep colors like shades of red if you want to emphasize elegance in the room. Just make sure that the color matches the rest of the room.

A carpeted floor is one obvious sign of formality but it doesn’t have to go. You can change the carpet’s color if you wish, or take it off and have a bare wood flooring instead. Complement the flooring with an area rug. Check the size of the dining area so you can purchase a rug that can accommodate the dining table set and that includes the chairs with a space left when they are moved back for sitting and getting up. Even a carpet flooring can be accented with an area rug.

You can add more decors by displaying some dining ornaments and collectibles. They don’t have to be rare, expensive pieces. Pretty stuff will do. If you have things you deem as special, you can showcase them in a glassware cabinet for all to see. It could make for a great conversation.

Replace the heavy, multi-layered drapes with simpler, one level curtains or sheers. (Make sure that your meals and gatherings are still shielded from the outside. You don’t want to give up your privacy and security.) Get rid of the tassels and elaborate tie-backs. Replace the heavy cornices with simpler rods and window hardware.

Don’t be daunted by the change in theme from formal to casual. It is feasible, especially with the right materials and decors on hand. The colors and furnishings say it all. The important thing is to retain the fun time with loved ones. The family that eats together, stays together.

Primping A Bachelor Pad

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Who says men can’t decorate? I admit that my vote for “who does it better?” goes to my gal pals. Women have a good eye for details, are more organized, meticulous and exercise patience than men do. Thus, decorating comes more naturally for the ladies than it is for the guys. BUT, it’s indeed strange how the world turns. Bachelor pads, and very impressive one at that, are growing in number. Men are now more expressive in using their abode as a reflection of themselves. Surprisingly, more men now also pay a bit more attention to details. So, how does decorating a man’s pad really goes?

Starting is the most challenging. Whether it’s in writing, working or decorating. You may have tons of ideas in your head but kicking off is still difficult. Where to begin? Not having any idea in your head proves to be more difficult. If so, research – surf the internet, look at magazines, visit stores and showrooms, watch TV programs. You’ll be pleased to know that you can get ideas from merely looking.

So you’ve picked out a theme and you want everything put in. So what should you do now?

The good thing about bachelor pads is that they are not as complicated as well…a bachelorette pad. A man’s place is simple, giving priority to comfort more than anything else. I’m sure you know the kind of guys who are luxuriously sprawled on the floor while watching a football game. For them, an expensive chair is not important. As long as they are comfortable, wherever they are, may it be on the floor or the toilet bowl, is perfect. Choose furniture that are functional and whose style work for you. If you’re a couch potato, then look for a comfy couch. If you’re a bookworm, make sure you have a bookshelf or storage to keep your books. If you like clothes, then have a closet that can accommodate your fashion indulgence.

Area rugs in different rooms, especially in the living room and dining room can bring a warm and inviting aura. An area rug in the bedroom can add to the comforting feel so vital for relaxation. The minimal furnishings won’t be a problem with area rugs to serve as focal points and accessories.

A bachelor pad can have the inviting quality even if the theme is contemporary and the look masculine. With a touch of colors, key decorative pieces and area rugs to complement the spaces, the pad will be welcoming and cozy, while giving off an elegant appearance. Very suitable to the man of the hour, yes?

Make Your Room Look Larger With Home Decor Tips

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

When you are living in a place you may have rooms that are huge but with this the room will normally feel too large. People like the feel of a small spot that will seem more comfortable. But in doing this they don’t want to make the area feel cramped either.

So, if you want the best of both worlds, how can you create the illusion that your small cozy space is actually huge? There are numerous approaches to this situation. Here are a few suggestions.

If you have a bunch of clutter around the room, pick it up. Clean out those old papers you have laying around, pile up the blankets too, remove whatever you don’t need in that room. Plus with the furniture you should move them further from walkways; this will open up a room very nicely.

Try using colors to brighten up the rooms feel. Try soft greens and blues which will open the area up and make it larger than it is. Try choosing colors which are already in the furniture that exists so you don’t have to spend more money than you need to.

Adding some color to the room does a lot. You have so many ways to bring an array of colors. One of course would be painting the walls. The reason you shouldn’t incorporate darker colors in the room, it will make the room seem smaller still. With lighter colors the light will reflect off those colors and enlarge the room. But adding warmth in the room will need a dark color so to do this you should only paint one wall, and the rest of the paint can be lighter tone.

Another way to bring in color is through the use of rugs. For a small space it is better to use one big area rug instead of small rugs that tend to chop up the space. When I moved into my friend’s home, I took along my favorite area rug. Her living room was on the small side, especially because her furniture was big and overstuffed. The walls were a very pale green which was good as it reflected the light but the floor was dark wood and rather cold in appearance. Her coffee table took up about a quarter of the room.

Once my area rug was in place under that enormous table, the room seemed to expand. The room was completely transformed with the simple use of an area rug. She was happy and I was proud.

The colors in my area rug were rich, deep tones that gave a feeling of comfort and warmth. The design of the rug was very artful, rather like a large painting for the floor. We found that trading out the big wood table for one that had a glass insert made a huge difference to opening up the room and you could enjoy the rug by looking through the table.

A large area rug brings interest and also expands your small area. Using furniture that is smaller, in a small space will help and then placing some lighting for dark corners and mirrors to give the illusion of greater depth in the room will also help. A couple simple changes, a splash of color and a big area rug and your small cozy space looks huge.

Don’t be ripped off by imitations. Be sure to buy authentic flokati area rugs directly.

Should You Buy A Waterbed?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

A waterbed is a bed with hard sides that form a frame that will support a mattress with water, or else one that has a foam frame in a fabric encasement that surrounds the water filled mattress. Waterbeds were originally designed for invalids to help prevent pressure sores from being bedridden over time.

The great asset to a waterbed is that it can be nice and warm. There is often a heater unit that can be set by the individual to the temperature that is most comfortable. Often this is around eight six degrees. These units are under the mattress which will help keep an even temperature. The actual waterbed mattress can be made from a vinyl material with safety features to reduce the potential of puncturing. If it does get a puncture, a kit often comes with the waterbed to repair it.

Waterbeds can be made with just 1 chamber holding the water. Some waterbeds however have several chambers. Other waterbeds are a mix of air and water chambers to eliminate wave action whenever the user moves around the mattress. A waterbed with just one chamber is called a free flow mattress. If the user moves around on this type of waterbed, the water sloshes back and forth -more like a wave and then it settles back. Many people however prefer to purchase waterbeds that are more stable. Who would want to be seasick in your own bedroom?People who look for more stable waterbeds usually look for those with fiber batting. Fiber batting cuts down on the sloshing of water back and forth. Another choice is to get a waterbed with interconnected chambers.

If anyone is looking to buy waterbeds, there are a few things to consider. Because water is heavy, a person needs to consider whether their floor is strong enough to hold a waterbed. Many times, a floor will need to be reinforced, particularly if it is on an upper story of a house. Not only are they heavy, they also use a bit of electricity to keep the water heated. A waterbed will consume somewhere between 500-2000 kWh yearly. They are also very difficult to move if the owner decided to rearrange the bedroom. A waterbed will have to be drained and disassembled then reassembled and refilled. Leaks are possible, and can be a hassle to repair. There are waterbed accessories that need to be purchased as well, such as heaters, mattress covers and protectors, and conditioning chemicals.

The great thing about waterbeds is how comfortable they are and how they mold to the body. They are great for those that have aches and pains. These types of beds reduce the amount of dust since the mattress is basically filled with water.

Everything has its pros and cons and that goes the same way with waterbeds. If you want to own a waterbed, you should keep in mind all these considerations.

James Hendry writes for about waterbeds providing information for everything to do with waterbed conditioner and waterbed accessories.

Cleveland Water Damage Restoration Can Save Your Home

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Although water is useful in many situations, too much water in a home can cause some real problems. Too much water results in flooding and water damage. If you do not begin to take steps to repair the damage within a few hours, the problem that you first found will grow worse. Cleveland water damage restoration is necessary to stop even more damage to your home.

Water damage may come from many sources. You may have a water supply pipe break. Toilets may overflow or sewer lines break or back up. You can have a leak in your roof or there may be natural flooding that occurs. In each of these conditions, the water can cause damage to your home that needs to be repaired before you can safely continue living in the home.

In each of the above named situations other than natural flooding, your homeowner’s insurance will likely cover the restoration of your property.

Most homeowners who live in flood plain areas are required by their mortgage company to have flood insurance. If your home is damaged by natural flooding, the flood insurance should pay for restoration.

Water damage professionals know how to deal with the insurance companies to get the funding necessary to restore your home. Some have a specific person whose only job is dealing with the insurance companies. Many of these professionals bill the insurance company directly. This means that you do not have to pay for the restoration and then wait for reimbursement.

Fresh water leaks are the easiest to clean if taken care of within 24 to 48 hours. After that time mold will have grown, and the damage must be taken care of like all other flooding damage. The contaminated water must be removed and the home disinfected and deodorized. Any mold that has begun to grow will need to be removed in such a way that spores are not spread to other areas of the home.

With a fresh water leak, you may want to use your shop vac to remove as much water as possible from your carpets while you wait for the professionals to come. With all other flooding, the cleanup is best left to the pros. They have the correct safety equipment to protect themselves from the germs that now fill your home. They will be able to get your furniture up out of the water and the house dried and cleaned again.

How to Have a Successful Garage Sale Before you Move

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Here are just a few tips to help you plan a successful garage sale. Having a garage sale before you move can save you both time and money. It is a great idea to do the planning in advance so you have plenty of time to organize the sale.

First, you should look through your home to see if you have items that are worth selling. If you haven’t used an item in the past five years it is probably not going to be missed. Go ahead and sell it!

A lot of items may be more expensive to move and ship than to sell at a minimal price. Make a list of items that you don’t use or want to sell. With that list, write down a price next to the item so you know the price range you are willing to sell the item for.

Normally you should charge 20% for items that are in excellent condition. Used, older items, such as especially books and clothing, should be priced much lower. Use stickers or tags to label the price of the items so everyone knows their price.

Take the time to make your items appear more appealing to customers. Don’t forget to wash, fold, iron, clean, and hang items. Presentation is the key, so make your items more attractive to potential buyers.

Consider having a block sale. Ask any friends or neighbors if they are interested in getting rid of extra clutter around their home. This can help you stay motivated, and will also increase the turnout.

If you are doing the garage sale on your own, ask for some extra help. It is safer to have two people manning a yard sale so you have an extra pair of eyes. It can be hard to conduct a garage sale by yourself.

Advertise that you are having a garage sale. Put up signs around the neighborhood, balloons and advertise in the classifieds. Check with your community to see if they have a website to post information about a moving sale.

Building a Chicken House Cheaply

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The chicken is a fantastic backyard pet to have. A conversation starter, a handy form of pest control, a source of fertilization, and best of all an ongoing source of healthy, tasty eggs! Those thinking about keeping hens should also think carefully about what kind of chicken house they are going to have.

When it comes to building a house for them, chickens are not fussy about looks. A collaboration of scrap materials will be viewed just as favorably as a masterpiece made of expensive timber. The main considerations are: whether the house is dry, clean and dark. Choose materials that will keep out the weather and any potential predators.

A good house will have easy access to food and water, good ventilation, and some light. Windows with sturdy mesh coverings are a good idea, and should be placed on either side of the hen house to allow cross-ventilation.

You can install doors to make it easier to get in and out for collecting eggs and cleaning, or have a hinged lid. A ramp leading up to the door will make it easier for the hens to get into their house.

The number of chickens you intend to have will decide how big their house should be. Make provision for individual nesting boxes and enough perching spaces to accommodate all of your chickens. There should be enough room for them all to flap and move about.

Chicken houses should have a thick layer of hay or wood shavings covering the ground. Keep nesting boxes well supplied with fresh hay to encourage egg laying. Make sure that no dampness can seep up from under the hen house. You may need to use a concrete base or build the hen house up on stilts to keep out the moisture.

There are some great plans that are easy to follow when you want to build a chicken house today! Find a great do it yourself project that will not require any special equipment and make a chicken house fast and easy!

Wintery Season A Boost For Many Companies

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Many Kentucky businesses thrive when the winter season brings forth its days of cold and snow showers. For example, when the Bluegrass State was hit with a major winter snow and ice storm Louisville heating repair companies were frequently contacted, as constant usage put many business and home owner systems in jeopardy. With outdated products performing poorly, Louisville heating companies were presented with an excellent opportunity to promote and sell new lines of high performance and energy efficient products.

This opportunity was great for business and despite a struggling economy, even small businesses were able to end their fiscal year with positive gains. HVAC sales and service companies are not the only businesses which benefit from the cold and snow of a long winter season. Take for example suppliers of such resources as kerosene, gas, electricity, and oil. Costs of these materials have seen record increases and providers find themselves with the upper hand. While these resources are used year round, cold weather conditions produce an increased need for them.

For those who choose to reside in areas of the country where the winter months consistently bring cold, wind, and snow, there are certain businesses that can bring about great financial gain. While there is not much need for a snow plow service in Orlando, Florida, snowplowing in Chicago, Illinois can be a very profitable job for many. Chicago residents are used to the elements and are very capable of braving the harsh wind and large snowfalls. Drivers are usually very used to operating their vehicles on snowy roads, provided these roads are being periodically plowed. For the snow plowing company who provides a thorough and competent service, there is much work to be found. Companies which provide road salt used in pretreating and treating snowy and icy road surfaces also can make a nice profit once they establish themselves within their selected communities. Large contracts can be had with state and county agencies and can provide job security to a great many people.

Locations in Colorado, Wyoming, California, and West Virginia capitalize on the winter conditions to operate winter resorts offering skiing, snowboarding, and other winter season recreations. There is big money to be made operating full service resort facilities. Even hourly employees of these resorts can make a nice living provided they are agreeable to work within the parameters of the job. Airport shuttle services to these resort locations, as well as food service providers, maintenance providers, and nearby hotels can also see big benefits from the resort business.

While the winter weather is not ideal for road and air commuters, it can be a real boost to the economy for many industrious workers. From sales and service companies who help their customers stay warm, to service providers who keep the streets drivable, to resort workers who provide ideal locations for rest and recreation, many businesses depend upon the snow for their livelihood. Just as there are many jobs unique to warm weather climates, wintery weather provides many with an excellent opportunity to make some money and provide timely and beneficial services to a great many consumers.
